Tokyo E-Prix winner Max Günther said that a feeling of momentum is carrying him into the next round of the FIA Formula E World Championship in Misano.
The Maserati MSG Racing man overcame the challenge of Nissan’s Oliver Rowland on the Tokyo streets to take his first Formula E win of the season, to bring him within touching distance of the leading pack in the Drivers’ Championship. Günther told Motorsport Week that he is hopeful of the win standing him in good stead for a potential title charge.
“The start of the season has been good, Tokyo was a brilliant weekend,” said Günther, adding: “since São Paulo, we showed very strong pace in all sessions and I feel great in the car, great in the team with the package, and it’s all coming together very nicely.
“For sure, I want to have a great and strong season, we are in a good position, the same as maybe six other drivers, so it’s still early on, but we want to do well.”
Formula E now makes its first trip to the Misano circuit in a purpose-built facility commonly known to Moto GP fans. Günther feels that, given the wider nature of the track will make for another peloton-style race more likely, he could stand a very good chance of another strong result.
“The good thing is we have been working very hard in the last couple to make our package as complete as possible, because traditionally, last year, we were good on especially faster tracks like Jakarta, or permanent tracks.
“Now, Tokyo was a typical street circuit and the performance has been great, so I really feel that no matter what track we are going to, we go there with a good feeling.
“Misano will be a different challenge to Tokyo, but we’re feeling good about it and the track looks great but as the same time, it will be a lot of energy-saving so it will be a dynamic race as we saw in São Paulo, for instance.
“A lot of things can happen in this kind of race, so of course I go there with a good feeling, good momentum from the weekend, so motivation is high.”
