Elfyn Evans held a 2.6 second lead at the halfway mark on Sunday but it was another hellish day for Hyundai.
Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team’s Safari bad luck streak continued unabated when the luckless Lappi had a puncture just 1km into the first stage, and with only one spare wheel had to be gentle for the rest of the 37km morning loop.
Kenya wasn’t done with the Finn just yet as the appropriately named Hell’s Gate saw the Finn limp through with transmission issues.
And then we come to Thierry Neuville who won the day’s first stage but went on to hit a massive rock on the racing line in Hell’s Gate, the final stage of the morning loop.
Further down the stage, the right rear suspension collapsed completely leaving Neuville to crab his way to the finish and back to the service park. The incident didn’t impact his overall position though if you’ll excuse the pun.
Evans powered his Toyota to two more stage wins to lead the Super Sunday standings at the halfway point by 2.6 seconds from Tanak with Katsuta lurking 0.8 seconds further back in third.
