Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans’ late lap took him to the top of the pack in the final practice session ahead of this morning’s Tokyo E-Prix.
The Kiwi’s final lap of the morning saw him nab the quickest time with a time of 1:19.339, just 0.061 ahead of the Nissan of Oliver Rowland. Maserati MSG Racing’s Max Guenther and Tag Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein were third and fourth respectively, both within a second of Evans’ time. Evans and his Jaguar team will be hoping for a strong showing in the Japanese capital, as both are celebrating 100 races in the FIA Formula E championship.
Wehrlein’s team-mate, Antonio Felix da Costa, was fifth, with the sister Jaguar of Nick Cassidy sixth. Jake Dennis was ahead for most of the session, but ended-up 10th, eight tenths of a second slower. Dennis’ team-mate, Norman Nato, was seventh, followed by Edoardo Mortara and Jean-Eric Vergne.
In the land of the rising sun, the sun did indeed rise, but in similar fashion to FP1, dampness in sections of the circuit – particularly turn one – caused drivers to spin at turn one. However, with the session held early in the morning local time, and with no more rain expected, the track is due to dry before qualifying and the race.
Drivers were still caught-out by the crests and dips on the circuit, which may cause havoc as the day progresses, but will surely provide much entertainment for the enthusiastic Japanese spectators and those tuning-in at home.
