Aston Martin has reportedly approached renowned Formula 1 engineer Adrian Newey to join its Silverstone-based outfit.
It’s no secret that Aston Martin Team Owner Lawrence Stroll has a habit of pinching things from the Milton Keynes-based Red Bull squad.
Aston Technical Director Dan Fallows was the former Head of Aerodynamics at Red Bull and Stroll has also secured a works engine deal with Honda for 2026 and beyond, with the 2023 announcement of that deal coming less than two years after Honda’s last official season as Red Bull power unit supplier.
According to Autosport, Stroll approached Newey at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March to depart reigning Constructors’ Champions Red Bull, teasing him with an alleged big money offer to make the trip from Milton Keynes to Silverstone.
Newey, Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull, joined the outfit in just its second year of competition in 2006 after title-winning stints at McLaren and Williams.
The 65-year-old is widely credited for his part in Red Bull’s growing accolades, which include seven Drivers’ titles and six Constructors’ titles.
Rightly so, Newey is therefore seen as a vital figure to help transform a team into a Championship-calibre outfit, which has been Stroll’s mandate at Aston Martin since day one.
Stroll’s desire to take a seat at F1’s winners’ table has seen him develop a state-of-the-art factory on Aston Martin’s existing Silverstone site, recruit World Champion drivers in the form of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso and hire top technical talent such as Fallows.
Newey could be seen as the final piece of Aston Martin’s title-winning puzzle and could tempt Alonso to extend his stay in British Racing Green.
The highly coveted signature of one of F1’s most decorated engineers has been sought after by more than one of Red Bull’s rivals over the years.
Like Aston Martin, Ferrari has tempted to lure the Brit away from his long-term home at Red Bull and Newey has admitted in the past to have come close to leaving for Maranello during Red Bull’s early troubles in F1’s Hybrid era.
Red Bull’s off-track troubles in 2024 have reignited the rumour mill regarding Newey’s future and some have speculated he could be tempted by Maranello once again.
If that is to be the case, Fred Vasseur and company will have to contend with Stroll’s latest big money swing to join F1’s elite.
