There have been two major announcements from FIA Formula E ahead of the opening practice session for this weekend’s race in Sao Paulo.
Early this morning, FE confirmed a technical partnership with Google Cloud, which they say will be “harnessing Google Cloud technologies ranging from scalable cloud infrastructure to data and analytics, to generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) tools in the GENBETA Race Car Development Programme to accelerate the growth of the world’s first all-electric motorsport.”
The connection began last season, when the AI ‘DriverBot’ provided by Google assisted NEOM McLaren’s Jake Hughes to set a new indoor land speed Guinness World Record ahead of the London E-Prix.
In Formula E’s statement, a three-point-plan set by themselves and Google will consist of “New Technologies in Sporting Development”, “Accelerating Fanbase Growth”, and “Supporting Formula E’s Sustainability Leadership”.
FE’s CEO Jeff Dodds said: “Our multi-year technology partnership with Google Cloud is clear evidence of the scale of our ambition in establishing Formula E as the world’s most innovative, exciting, and fastest-accelerating sport.
“We began our collaboration by setting a world record and are hugely ambitious about what’s next.”
Laurence Lafont, Vice President, Strategic Industries EMEA, Google Cloud, said: “Google Cloud is excited to partner with Formula E to bring the cutting edge of cloud technologies to the thrilling world of electric racing.
“Together, we’ll accelerate innovation on and off track, and build the future of sustainable motorsport.”
FE have also announced a brand new Manufacturers’ Trophy, which will be battled amongst the six manufacturers, Electric Racing Technologies, Jaguar, Mahindra Racing, Nissan, Porsche, and STELLANTIS. The points scoring structure will be the same as the Teams’ Championship, with additional points for Pole Position and Fastest Lap. The winner will receive, as well as the trophy itself, a “Winner’s Badge” that will be displayed on drivers’ helmets, cars and team clothing next season.
Alberto Longo, FE’s Co-Founder, said: “We are thrilled to unveil the Manufacturers’ Trophy for Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
“This has been a long time in the making and marks a real milestone in the evolution of the Championship as it captures the competitive spirit that fuels Formula E.
“Our manufacturers are at the heart of our journey, pushing the boundaries of technology and sustainability in motorsport.
“Their contributions are vital, not just in shaping the future of racing but in advancing electric vehicle technology for the road.
“This trophy will celebrate their innovation, their commitment, and their role in driving us towards a more sustainable future.”
Ian James, Chairman of the Teams and Manufacturers Association [FETAMA] said: “With the launch of the Manufacturers’ Trophy in Season 10, we’re stepping into a new era of Formula E, one that further amplifies our dedication to innovation.
“Formula E as a World Championship features one of the most impressive Manufacturer line-ups in motorsport, and it is great to be able to recognise and reward the contributions of Manufacturers to the series’ past, present and future.
“The addition of this trophy not only intensifies the competitive landscape but also shines a spotlight on the advanced engineering behind each team.
