Ford’s title-sponsorship of Red Bull-nominated F1 Academy driver Emely de Heus reaffirms the American marques’ faith in its developing partnership with Red Bull powertrains.
The famous blue oval features prominently on de Heus’ car livery and racing overalls as the Dutch racer prepares to kick off her second F1 academy campaign in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia this weekend.
Ford and Red Bull’s partnership goes deeper, as the two enterprises have teamed up ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 power unit regulations, with Red Bull powertrains receiving backing from the American car manufacturer.
However, recent developments surrounding the now completed investigation into allegations against Christian Horner’s conduct toward a female employee had cast doubt over Ford’s willingness to continue its journey with the Red Bull squad.
Red Bull’s investigation into the claims concluded ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix cleared the Team Principal of the allegations.
Still, as the investigation unfolded, Ford released statements reflecting the marque’s impatience in awaiting an outcome.
Initially, Global Head of Ford Performance Motorsport Mark Rushbook didn’t directly comment on the investigation but told The Independent on Friday, February 16 that: ““As a family company, and a company that holds itself to very high standards of behaviour and integrity, we do expect the same from our partners.
“It appears to us, and what we’ve been told, was that Red Bull is taking the situation very seriously. And of course, they’re worried about their brand, as well.
“And that’s why they’ve got an independent investigation and until we see what truth comes out of that, it’s too early for us to comment on it all.”
However, a letter read by the Associated Press on Monday, February 25 showed growing unrest regarding the situation within the Ford camp.
CEO Jim Farley wrote that Ford was “increasingly frustrated by the lack of resolution or clear indication from you about when you anticipate a fair and just resolution of this matter.
“We are likewise frustrated by the lack of full transparency surrounding this matter with us, your corporate partners, and look forward to receiving a complete account of all findings.”
However, Ford’s backing of the Red Bull F1 Academy project is a positive development regarding the partnership and Ford reaffirmed its position via a press release obtained by Autosport.
It read “the partnership further cements Ford’s long supported commitment to attracting more diversity across its motorsport portfolio, as part of the company’s broader STEM and DEI initiatives.
“This new title partnership with Red Bull Ford Academy Programme gives Ford the opportunity to further attract more women to the sport across all levels and roles, especially within the world of Red Bull Technology, alongside the wider initiatives that support diversity and inclusion.”
Rushbrook said: “Ford Performance is committed to working with the FIA and race promoters to find ways to integrate more female talent into all levels of motorsport, both on and off the track, and this is a great opportunity to extend that work by partnering with the best in F1 Academy.
“We have already partnered in other race series, such as Rebelle Rally, in addition to drivers such as Hailie Deegan, to bring more women to the forefront of motorsport. I am excited to partner with Red Bull to make a positive impact in F1.”
“Ford are an automotive manufacturer rich in motoring history that spans generations,” added Red Bull Racing Director of Partnerships, Julia George.
“Welcoming them as title partner of the Red Bull Ford Academy Programme is hugely exciting and demonstrates their appetite for improving female representation in motorsports both on and off the track.
“F1 Academy marks a major step forward for female drivers’ progression to the next level in motorsport and helps provide a pathway to ensure they can fulfil their potential, a commitment that is fully supported by Ford.
“The wealth of technical expertise that they bring to the partnership is crucial for the success of the Red Bull Ford Academy programme car, and we are excited to see what the 2024 F1 Academy season brings.”
