The Alpine Formula 1 squad has introduced a new three-pronged technical structure, with key figures Matt Harman and Dirk de Beer leaving the Anglo-French outfit.
The decision comes after the Enstone/Viry team got off to a torrid start to the 2024 season with a revamped car compared to last term when it regressed in the order.
From finishing fourth in the 2022 Constructors’ standings in 2022 to sixth last term, Alpine hoped a complete overhaul to its A524 charger would help its cause in 2024.
However, the Bahrain Grand Prix documented the monumental challenge ahead, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly locking out the final row of the grid in qualifying.
To counteract the disappointing start, Alpine has elected to follow a similar three-pronged technical structure devised by McLaren last year, introducing Joe Burnell as Technical Director (Engineering), David Wheater as Technical Director (Aerodynamics) and Ciaron Pilbeam as Technical Director (Performance).
These changes coincide with former Technical Director Matt Harman and Head of Aerodynamics Dirk de Beer seeking pastures new.
All three members of the new technical team will report directly to Alpine Team Principal Bruno Famin, who has stepped up into the position on a full-time basis this term.
“We have decided to make these organisational changes as we can clearly see that we are not where we want nor need to be in terms of performance level and it is time to take another step in terms of organisation and people,” said Famin.
“The new three-pillared structure with three Technical Directors, each specialising in different areas, will bring better work and collaboration across our technical areas and contribute to delivering performance from the factories to the race track.
“I trust fully in the abilities of Joe, David and Ciaron to work closely together in bringing the team the performance and improvements that it needs.
“Finally, I would like to thank Matt and Dirk for their efforts over the last couple of years at the team and wish them the very best in the next chapter of their careers.”
The three new technical leaders will work in conjunction with Eric Meignan, who leads the Viry-based portion of the Alpine project as Technical Director (Power Unit).
In addition, the team’s new Enstone CEO John Woods and his Viry counterpart Audrey Vastroux have each taken up office.
