The Peugeot Sport Hypercar team has confirmed a largely retained lineup of drivers for the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, as former LMP2 vice-champion Stoffel Vandoorne makes his return.
The 2021 LMP2 vice-champion and current DS Penske Formula E driver already made his race debut in the #93 Peugeot 9X8, when Nico Muller was unable to take part in the 6 Hours of Fuji due to an injury.
After Gustavo Menezes announced his departure from Peugeot, Vandoorne succeeded as a replacement having served as the team’s reserve driver and will take on his first full-season campaign since 2021.
Unsurprisingly, the other five drivers have been retained by the Stellantis manufacturer. In the #93 entrant, Mikkel Jensen is joined by Muller and DS Penske Formula E driver Jean-Eric Vergne.
In the other #94 Hypercar, Paul di Resta and Loic Duval joins the Belgian driver for the 2024 season.
Olivier Jansonnie, Peugeot Sport technical director, said: “The standard in the FIA WEC is such that you cannot afford to neglect any aspect and so we have worked during the off-season on trying to improve everywhere we can.
“The makeup of the crews is an important piece of the jigsaw and having studied race and test data, we were convinced we could fine-tune the line-ups.
“We are lucky to have six highly talented drivers, so we decided to optimise each car by grouping together the drivers in terms of their set-up preferences, the aim being to deliver improved performance.”
Furthermore, the team has confirmed young sportscar talent Malthe Jakobsen as their reserve driver this year, after he was named an ‘Official Junior Driver’ in 2023.
The WEC season-opener is set to take place in Qatar, for the Prologue pre-season test on 24-25 February.
Following this will be Round 1 of the calendar, which will be a 1812 km (or 10-hour) race on 2 March.
