Formula E continues to be the leader of sustainability in sport, with the all-electric series having topped three major independent sustainability rankings once again.
For the third year in succession, Formula E claimed top spot in the Sustainable Championships Index (SChI™) and the Sustainable Motorsport Index (SMI), whilst the series also retained the number one spot in the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport (GSBS) for the second year in a row.
Remarkably, GSBS, who are an independent sustainability rating organisation, awarded Formula E four of their five awards, as published in their annual report. GSBS’ annual report consisted of a comprehensive analysis made up of 55 organisations in the sporting world, including Formula 1.
Formula E has iconically been net-zero since its birth, with 2024 marking the sport’s 10th season. GSBS ranked Formula E highest in Best Corporate Performance, Best Social Performance, and Best Governance Performance in 2023, whilst the single-seater series also shared the Best Total Performance award with German football club, Borussia Dortmund.
In the third edition of the SChI™, a business run by Enovation Consulting, supported by University College London, Formula E collected four cups and the top position in the Index. The series outperformed their competition by some margin, and actually overtook F1.
As for SMI, the world’s only performance system which publicly reveals its sustainability practices against the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and the ESG framework in motorsports, Formula E topped their Index.
Topping so many Indexes and claiming so many awards is a deserved achievement for Formula E, who continue to raise “the bar in the global standard for sustainability in sport”.
“We are proud to keep raising the bar in the global standard for sustainability in sport. Sustainability has been at the core of our championship since its inception, and we are determined to build on our commitment and capabilities year after year,” said Julia Pallé, Vice President, Sustainability, Formula E.
“Topping the charts once again reinforces that entertainment and sustainability can coexist without compromise. We urge the sports industry to continue working towards the highest level of sustainable operations and to use their influence to engage fans on the collective mission to combat climate change and social progress in line with the UN Sport 4 Climate action framework.”
