Dane Cameron will return to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship after a two-year hiatus, as Porsche confirmed his full-time 2024 seat swap with Matt Campbell, who will return to the World Endurance Championship.
In the #7 Porsche 963 LMDh, Felipe Nasr and Cameron will pair up as the full-season IMSA drivers ahead of Porsche Penske’s second GTP campaign.
Josef Newgarden will be the Endurance Cup driver for the team having debuted at Petit Le Mans, and Campbell will serve as their fourth driver for the 24 Hours of Daytona.
“We’ve made a logical change in our driver squad, said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport.
“Our goal continues to be to optimise the overall package for contesting the two major championships.
“This applies to the vehicle and the team processes as well as the cockpit crews.
“Last season we fought for the title in the IMSA series until the last race.
“Our expectations for 2024 are high: we want to lead the way in North America, Le Mans and the FIA WEC.”
Cameron’s experience in North American sportscar racing stretches beyond his nine years of IMSA, preceded by his American Le Mans Series and Rolex Sportscar Series efforts.
The first of his three IMSA titles came from a debut GTD campaign with Turner Motorsport, then finding success in 2016 for Action Express Racing.
He continued driving prototypes and ran a three-year stint with the Acura Team Penske team from 2018, securing the DPi title with teammate Juan Pablo Montoya in 2019, before their IMSA departure prompted him to join Meyer Shank Racing in 2021.
This was the last full IMSA season he competed in, after he joined Porsche Penske this year, solely participating in the Daytona 24 and Sebring 12 Hour races along with the WEC season.
Meanwhile Campbell ran a convincing IMSA campaign with Porsche Penske, which was his first in an endurance prototype machine, after he took his first GTP win at Road America.
Porsche Penske finished fourth and fifth in the IMSA Teams’ Standings, and sixth and seventh in the WEC standings.
After gaining only one WEC podium at Fuji, they were more competitive in IMSA and will set about optimising their performances in the 2024 WEC with an increased Hypercar field.
