Loose drain cover curtails FP1 session in Las Vegas

Formula 1 and the Las Vegas Grand Prix have said that single-day ticket holders for Thursday will receive $200 discount vouchers for the event’s store.

Those who attended Thursday’s track activity saw only eight minutes of action due to loose drain covers that caused the remainder of FP1 to be cancelled.

FP2 started two-and-a-half hours late and did so without fans in attendance due to ‘risks for our employees and fans’, per an F1 statement.

They pointed to federal law dictating working hours for transportation employees, police departments and other public safety officials, as well as a need for hospitality staff to clean and resupply guest areas.

The majority of fans in attendance are on three-day guest passes – and will not qualify for the voucher – but those who only had Thursday tickets will receive the discount.

“Hello Valued Fan,” read a message sent to those impacted.

“There is no higher priority at a Formula 1 race than the safety and security of drivers, fans and staff alike. Following last night’s incident involving a water valve cover, the Las Vegas Grand Prix, F1 and the FIA were faced with the difficult decision to close the fan zones prior to the beginning of Free Practice 2.

“We appreciate your patience while we remedied the situation. This was not a decision we took lightly. As a thank you for your support, we would like to offer you a $200 voucher to the Las Vegas Grand Prix Official Shop.”
