BMW have been handed the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship win after the winning Porsche 953 failed post-race scrutineering checks.
The Porsche, which Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy steered to an entertaining win after hunting down the BMW, with Jaminet making a pass in the final green flag laps before the race ended under caution, was found to have exceeded the permitted amount of wear on the skid block after the race.
“In postrace inspection, the No. 6 Porsche was found with a skid block measuring less than the permitted minimum thickness and was moved to the rear of the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) finishing order,” said IMSA in an official statement.
This means the #25 BMW M Hybrid V8 of Connor De Phillippi and Neck Yelloly have won BMW’s maiden race in the IMSA championship, 23 years after the manufacturer’s last prototype win. This is both drivers first overall victories in IMSA, plus Yelloly’s first victory in IMSA competition regardless of class.
In addition, all four manufacturers in the GTP class have now won a race, from five races this season.
