Lance Stroll denies that he is owed some luck amid a difficult stretch of form in Formula 1.
Stroll currently sits eighth in the Drivers’ Championship on 27 points, while veteran team-mate Fernando Alonso is third in the standings with a tally of 93 points.
Alonso has scored five podiums in the opening six rounds, while Stroll has failed to score points on three occasions, with his best result coming in Australia, where he crossed the line in fourth.
Stroll was battling an injury in the opening rounds, and retired from the second round at Jeddah through a mechanical problem.
He finished 12th in Miami, before retiring from the Monaco Grand Prix after picking up damage late on in the race.
In recent weeks, questions have been raced over his position within the Aston Martin F1 squad – and Stroll says that it is up to him to pull himself back into a competitive position.
“I don’t really think that,” he said, when asked if he felt he was owed luck.
“I mean, it’s luck, things happen in racing, and we had some tough weekends.
“We had a retirement in Jeddah and I think we were having a strong weekend last weekend and then some damage in Q2 cost us an opportunity for good points on Sunday.
“Monaco is all about Saturday really, so I think it’s just how it goes: there’s good weekends and bad weekends.
“Like every other weekend I’m just coming into this one trying to get the most out of it. So, yeah, see how it goes.”
Alonso has held the upper hand on Stroll during the opening rounds so far and has often been the closest challenger to the Red Bull duo at the head of the field, leading Stroll to praise the Spaniard.
“He’s pretty impressive for an old guy, that’s for sure,” Stroll said. “No, he’s been doing very well.
“I mean, everyone, you know, the results speak for themselves. He’s on top of his game and he’s enjoying driving the car.
“He’s physically fit, mentally in a great place and yeah, it goes to show, if you look after yourself, you can go for a long time.”
Lance Stroll has underperformed throughout his time in F1, and now is being shown up by Alonso to an embarrassing degree. He is holding the AM team back from what could otherwise be a very successful season. Team owner’s son or not, he needs to go.
