Pierre Gasly believes Alpine should continue to target the level of performance it achieved in Monaco in the wake of Esteban Ocon’s podium finish.
Alpine endured a troubled start to 2023 amid operational issues and other setbacks, reaching its nadir in Azerbaijan, where it endured a woeful weekend after introducing a heavily updated car.
That prompted stinging criticism from CEO Laurent Rossi, after which Alpine scored double points in Miami, and followed it up with its strongest display of the year in Monaco.
Ocon qualified fourth and scored third place while Gasly qualified and raced to seventh spot.
It marked Alpine’s first podium since 2021 and lifted it clear of McLaren in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
“The performance I’ve seen in Monaco is the performance I want to repeat – it’s the performance I believe is achievable in Alpine,” said Gasly.
“If we achieve that in Monaco, I don’t see any reasons why we shouldn’t be able to achieve it in other race tracks – [but] first of all we need to get that consistency, I don’t want to make big conclusions after only one race, it’s important to repeat these weekends in the coming races.”
Gasly outlined that the podium has given Alpine greater confidence moving into the next phase of the season.
“The performance was extremely good in Monaco, we were able to fight the Mercedes, Ferrari, even out-perform them, and it will be important to confirm the performance on a more traditional track like Barcelona,” he said.
“It’s deserved for all the guys to get that podium at this point in the season, I can see the smiles it’s bringing, and the motivation and mindset is different, more confident, clearly going after Mercedes and Ferrari.
“Weekend after weekend we are able to have a stronger package, more consistent, more reliable, more compliant and more robust.
“I think it’s important to confirm the performance here in Barcelona with a lot more high-speed [corners], harder for tyres, more power sensitive, so it’s important for us to get a strong result here.”
