The first qualification round of Sunday was held in the early afternoon, and the fastest 12 drivers from Saturday took one more run to determine who would be able to compete for pole.
Drivers were not allowed to make multiple attempts, and the pressure was on run a mistake-free four laps when their number was called.
The driver that put in the fastest time was Felix Rosenqvist, who averaged 234.081 MPH across his run. His speed was fractionally faster than his own fast time on Saturday, and put him in prime position to take the top spot later in the day.
His Arrow McLaren team-mate Pato O’Ward also advanced into the final round with his run, putting half of the team’s contingent in position to fight for pole.
Two Chip Ganassi Racing drivers also advanced, with Alex Palou and Scott Dixon each improving on their own times from the day before and logging the fourth and fifth fastest times of the session.
Palou and Dixon were the only two Honda drivers to make into the top six spots, and they were surrounded by a sea of yellow bowties.
Santino Ferrucci put in the second fastest set of laps, showing real pace from his AJ Foyt Racing entry, which is painted to look just like an American flag flying in the wind.
Rinus VeeKay was the sixth driver to advance, and was the lone entrant from Ed Carpenter Racing to make it into the top spots.
During the same session, positions seven through 12 were locked in. Team-mates Alexander Rossi and Tony Kanaan will start the race from the third row, with Takuma Sato stuck in the middle.
The fourth row will have last year’s Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson on the inside, and he will be alongside the rookie Ben Pedersen and the veteran Will Power.
The teams for the top six drivers only have two hours to go over every inch of their cars one more time, preparing them for the final runs that determine the pole position.
The Fast Six shootout takes place at 5:15PM Eastern Time, just as the front stretch will be shaded from the summer sun.
