Officials in Hungary have formally opened a new circuit, Balaton Park, the highest FIA standard track to have been constructed in the region in over a decade.
The circuit is located near Balaton Lake, 90km South West of capital city Budapest, following an investment of over €200 million.
The anti-clockwise circuit, which has 16 corners, has permanent seating for 10,000 spectators while there is scope for up to 120,000 with the addition of temporary grandstands.
The next phase of the project is due to include the construction of a four-star hotel, museum and further fan attractions.
Organisers at Balaton Park have initially applied for a Grade 2 licence, in order to host FIA-sanctioned events, but have built the circuit with Grade 1 specification in mind.
“We are very proud to be celebrating today the official opening of Balaton Park Circuit, a unique project that began as a dream and is now a reality thanks to the unwavering commitment of Balaton Park Group,” said Board Member Gianpaolo Matteucci.
“The main phase of construction began four years ago and was executed with particular attention to safety, innovation and with special care for the environment.
“As we are ready to host international motorsport events, Balaton Park Circuit has been built in accordance to the highest standards as required by FIA and FIM regulations.”
