The LMP3 class will be cut from the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship at the end of this season, IMSA has confirmed.
This will leave four classes in the premier US sportscar series: GTP, LMP2, GTD Pro and GTD.
LMP3 was added to the series in 2021 to help boost grid sizes, but with the burgeoning GTP class, still in its first year, plus the other three classes all being healthy, LMP3 was deemed unnecessary.
This news will not come as a surprise to the IMSA paddock, as the sanctioning body had held multiple discussions in the last few months about the future of LMP3 in the championshiip.
LMP3 will remain as a class in the new-for-2023 VP Racing Challenge, which replaced the IMSA Prototype Challenge for this year. That sees LMP3 machinery go up against GT4 cars with bronze or silver-mandated drivers.
