Berlin ePrix: Vandoorne fastest in FP1 ahead of Dennis

Stoffel Vandoorne, DS Penske, DS E-Tense FE23, leads Nick Cassidy, Envision Racing, Jaguar I-TYPE 6

Reigning champion Stoffel Vandoorne was fastest ahead of Jake Dennis and Maximilian Gunther in the first practice session of the Berlin ePrix double-header.

Lap times came tumbling towards the end of the sessions as the drivers warmed to their surroundings, with the top three breaking through the previous lap record in Berlin.

The only disruption to the session came inside the first 10 minutes with Edoardo Mortara finding his way into the runoff and bringing out a yellow flag.

The Tempelhof Circuit is no stranger to Formula E action, hosting the most events out of any venue in the series’ history.

Despite being very familiar to many of the veterans in the series, there will be much to learn with the new Hankook tyres being a much harder compound than the Michelins.

Jaguar continued to show their growing strength, ending the session with both cars inside the top 10. Sam Bird beat out Kiwi teammate Mitch Evans by a hundredth of a second.

The same can’t be said for customer team Envision whose cars both finished outside the top 10 in the session. The Jaguar-powered teams will hope to build on the success they saw in Sao Paulo where they locked out the podium.

Jean-Eric Vergne and Edoardo Mortara joined their team-mates in the top half of the leaderboard, finishing the session in fourth and fifth respectively.

Both DS Penske and Maserati have had a difficult start to Gen3, but are continuing to grow week after week.

Andre Lotterer finished the session for Andretti in ninth for his home race, showing some strong single-lap pace for the American team, where they have previously struggled.

The action continues tomorrow with Free Practice 2 at 8 am local time.
