The 2023 edition of the Indianapolis 500 is 100 days away as of this Friday, and the NTT IndyCar Series held a series of events to mark the occasion.
The focal point of the celebration was a free fan event held in the evening at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with driver autograph sessions, on-track photo opportunities, and more.
At the event, four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves was given a special honor by having a bronze brick etched with his name and accomplishments inserted directly into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway racing surface.
Even with most of the track paved with asphalt for many years, there remains a yard of bricks at the finish line of the historic speedway, and a few carry messages of special accomplishments.
Castroneves’ brick will forever be part of the track itself, alongside other commemorative bricks to mark other special events, even as he looks to extend his victory total to five this season driving for Meyer Shank Racing.
Announced earlier on Friday was the release date for the first episode of the television show 100 Days to Indy. The CW and VICE produced series will debut on Thursday April 27, and will follow paddock personalities as they prepare for the iconic race in late May.
Also announced was the news that broadcasting duo Mike Tirico and Danica Patrick will be returning as hosts for coverage of this year’s Indy 500 on NBC.
Both have lent their on-air talents to multiple events in the past, and will join the returning trio of Leigh Diffey, Townsend Bell, and James Hinchcliffe in the booth.
The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place on Sunday, May 28, and will see Marcus Ericsson defend his title against 32 other competitors.
