Nico Hulkenberg has delivered his opinion on the controversial ban regarding unapproved political statements, saying it “won’t affect or impact that much” from his side.
Earlier this month, the FIA confirmed in the latest version of its International Sporting Code that unapproved political, religious and personal statements were prohibited.
Some drivers, particularly Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, have been active in creating awareness of social issues in recent years.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown backed the FIA injunction, insisting that the right balance must be found on the matter.
But from Hulkenberg’s side, the 2023 Haas driver insists that it will not have a major effect on his day-to-day activities.
“It will affect others more,” Hulkenberg said, speaking to RTL.
“I think it’s a personal story. Everyone has a personal take on that.”
F1 launched the ‘We Race as One’ initiative in 2020 to promote equality and diversity, with some drivers opting to consistently spread messages across the last few years.
The sport has been criticised by some fans in recent seasons for striking deals to race in countries that have been accused of human rights abuses.
However, Hulkenberg suggested that he arrives in a region primarily to carry out his driving duties.
“It’s a delicate, difficult subject,” Hulkenberg added. “We are athletes, we come to a country, a region, to do our work to pursue what we love.
“I’ve never been one to use this platform for political messaging.”
Hulkenberg will return to the grid next year, replacing Mick Schumacher who was dropped by Haas at the end of the 2022 campaign.
