Mercedes has confirmed that Mick Schumacher has joined the team in a reserve role for the 2023 Formula 1 season.
Schumacher lost his F1 drive for next year at Haas when the US-owned squad opted to sign Nico Hulkenberg in his place.
Earlier today, Ferrari also confirmed that both it and Schumacher had decided to part ways following four years in partnership.
Mercedes has been in need of a new reserve after Nyck de Vries signed to race with AlphaTauri in 2023 while Stoffel Vandoorne switched to DS Penske in Formula E following Mercedes’ departure from the all-electric series.
“I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as their reserve driver for 2023, and I am committed to give it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment,” Schumacher said.
“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me.
“F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”
Mercedes has a history with the Schumacher family – Mick’s father Michael spent his final three years in F1 (2010 – 2012) with the team.
Mercedes says that Schumacher will conduct regular work at its simulator in Brackley during the year, while he will also attend all grands prix in 2023.
The German will be called upon to race if either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell is unable to participate.
“Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the team,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
“He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities, and we’re excited for him to help us develop the W14.
“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula 1 under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise.”
