The FIA has confirmed Nyck de Vries’ driver number, which he will use throughout his Formula 1 career.
De Vries will compete with the number 21 when he makes his full-season debut in the sport next year.
The Dutchman has signed to race with AlphaTauri, replacing Pierre Gasly who has departed to compete for Alpine.
De Vries, a champion in Formula 2 and Formula E, took part in his first F1 race earlier this year with Williams after stepping in for an unwell Alexander Albon at Monza.
He impressed en route to a ninth place finish, which boosted his prospects of a 2023 drive.
Soon after the Italian Grand Prix, he was prompted by compatriot Max Verstappen to call Dr Helmut Marko regarding a drive for 2023.
He will partner Yuki Tsunoda at the team next year, with the Japanese driver returning for a third season with AlphaTauri.
De Vries is the first driver since Esteban Gutierrez to run number 21, with the Mexican last racing in F1 in 2016 with Haas.
The other two F1 rookies in the 2023 field, Oscar Piastri and Logan Sargeant, will run 81 and 2 respectively.
