Colton Herta has not had what most drivers would consider a bad season, but the 22-year-old certainly feels like things could have gone better.
After finishing in the top five in points the last two IndyCar seasons, Herta finds himself down in 10th near the end of the season and firmly out of the championship race.
There have also been persistent rumors that he will make his way into F1 in the near future, with the latest information pointing to a possible bending of the super license rules to allow him to compete.
Nothing has been decided yet on that front, however, and potential options continue to close as this year’s remarkable silly season begins to sort itself out.
Motorsportweek.com asked Herta if he has been given any new information regarding his potential move, and he quickly deflected into how disappointed he is with his current season in IndyCar.
“No, and I’m really just focused on this weekend,” said Herta. “I just want to get good results here, and finish out these last two IndyCar races strong.
“It’s been a pretty disappointing year for me. Been pretty miserable at some stages. Really just focusing on getting two wins in these last two races.
“Maybe it’s just a coincidence that we have some good tracks at the end of the season for us. Laguna has obviously been incredible. This place [Portland] a little bit less so, but we still had incredible pace here. It is a place that we can be strong, but we just have to put everything together.”
Herta has one win this season, which came via an incredible drive in wet conditions on the Indianapolis road course in May.
He has only seen the podium once since then, however, and has watched others around him wrack up wins that he would like to have for himself.
In a follow-up about how he would rate his season overall, Herta said frankly, “Probably a C. It’s been pretty miserable.”
