Will Power has been in the NTT IndyCar Series for nearly 20 years, and is one of the series’ longest tenured drivers. But he is still learning how to mentally approach each race.
When he was younger, Power was known as one of the more high energy racers, and he would often find himself getting outwardly upset when things didn’t go his way.
A reset this season in the form of a calmer attitude is paying dividends every week, and he now sits in the points lead with only four races remaining in the 2022 season.
“It’s not necessarily the long game, it’s just that sort of attitude switch where you know these races are long,” said Power after the race on Saturday. “The season is long, and you’ve got to make the most of every situation.
“Even if you’re fighting for like 12th. If that’s your day to finish 12th, well, finish 12th, not 24th. Yeah, it’s certainly working very well.
He also went on to explain that sitting at the head of the points table feels different than it did years ago on account of his mental state.
“So different to what it was back then. I just know the game so well. Mentally just miles ahead mentally in every respect than I was back then.
“Yeah, just a tremendous amount of experience in this series.”
Power has now scored a podium in four of the last five races, and has increased his career podium total up to 92.
The veteran will look to keep his momentum going as he tries to earn his second championship eight years after winning his first and only title in 2014.
