IndyCar completed its one and only practice session from Iowa Speedway on Friday afternoon, and it was Will Power who was able to put in the fastest lap of the day.
Power lapped the 7/8-mile oval in 18.5729 seconds at an average speed of 173.285 MPH, and was able to complete approximately one third of a race distance by crossing the finish line 90 times.
Conor Daly was at the top of the timesheets for much of the 90-minute session, but ended the afternoon with the second fastest time.
The likeable 30-year-old’s only pole of his career came at Iowa in 2020, when he earned the top spot for Carlin and went on to finish eighth.
Scott McLaughlin was the third fastest in his special black and blue livery, continuing his strong performance around the various ovals the series visits.
There were a couple yellow flags to disrupt the session, but those were thrown for officials to inspect the track rather than for any incidents.
Otherwise, it was a very straightforward session with no incidents and plenty of laps being turned.
The biggest challenge of the afternoon was the temperature, which was nearly 95°F and forced much of the field to run cool suits to keep the drivers from overheating.
Multiple lines presented themselves in the corners, and drivers were able to practice fighting side by side through much of the session. The second groove should come in even more as more rubber is laid down throughout the weekend.
With the only practice session complete, the next time the cars will take to the track will be for the solo qualifying session on Saturday morning.
A single qualifying run will set the order for both races of the doubleheader, with the first lap counting for the first race and the second lap counting for Sunday’s finale.
