Alpine’s Fernando Alonso set the fastest time during a rain-hit final practice session for Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Conditions remained gloomy and wet throughout the course of the one-hour session, following steady rain through the morning, along with cold air temperature of around 12c.
Drivers used Wet tyres for the majority of the session before switching to Intermediates during the final 15 minutes.
Alonso set a time of 1:33.836s to finish 0.053s up on AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly, with Sebastian Vettel third for Aston Martin.
Esteban Ocon was fourth for Alpine, in front of McLaren duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris.
Sergio Perez was the quickest of the usual front-runners in eighth position.
Max Verstappen was a low-key ninth and had several off-track excursions during the session.
Verstappen went wide at Turn 10, ran across the grass at the Turn 4 chicane, and spun through Turn 2, though avoided damage on each occasion.
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished at the foot of the top 10 while team-mate Charles Leclerc completed only five installation laps and did not set a time.
Mercedes finished with George Russell seventh and Lewis Hamilton in 15th place.
Saturday’s qualifying session is scheduled for 16:00 local time.

And Alonso shows he is indeed still the best on the grid. Just imagine him in a Red Bull on a weekly basis. Young Max might get the edge from time to time (he is no slouch), but I think it would be a brutal mopping otherwise.
