Edoardo Mortara set the opening pace in first practice for the Rome E-Prix, as the Venturi driver set a 1:40.022.
Mitch Evans followed him, the Jaguar driver 0.219 behind, with world champion Nyck de Vries in the Mercedes-EQ third, 0.324 than Mortara, who has also the Mercedes-EQ powertrain in the Venturi.
Antonio Felix da Costa went fourth for DS Techeetah, with Robin Frijns fifth in his Envision. Stoffel Vandoorne was sixth, 0.622 slower than Mortara, with Andre Lotterer seventh for Porsche.
Alexander Sims went eighth fastest for Mahindra, with Jaguar’s Sam Bird ninth quickest. Sergio Sette Camara rounded out the top 10 for Dragon.
In the second half of the field, Maximillian Gunther was the fastest Nissan, 1.3 seconds slower than Mortara. Mortara’s teammate Lucas di Grassi went 12th fastest, with the other Nissan, Sebastien Buemi behind the wheel, in 13th.
DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne could only manage 14th, with previous race winner Pascal Wehrlein 15th. Oliver Turvey went 16th for Nio 333, with fellow Oliver, Oliver Askew, next up in 17th for Andretti.
Dragon’s Antonio Giovinazzi was 18th fastest, while Nick Cassidy was only 19th fastest in the other Envision. Oliver Rowland was the slowest Oliver in 20th for Mahindra, with Nio 333’s Dan Ticktum and Andretti’s Jake Dennis taking the final two spots in 21st and 22nd.
