Marc Marquez will miss the Algarve Grand Prix this weekend after suffering a concussion in a training accident on Saturday.
His Repsol Honda team revealed that the Spaniard sustained a concussion after falling from his off-road bike while training, and following advice from doctors after still feeling unwell four days after the crash the decision was made for him to skip the Algarve GP to try and be fit for the season finale at Valencia next weekend.
Repsol Honda has not revealed whether Marquez will be replaced; test rider Stefan Bradl is the likely substitute if the team opts to field two bikes.
“This past Saturday Marc Marquez, while preparing for the Algarve Grand Prix with one of his standard off-road training sessions, suffered a fall that caused a slight head concussion,” began Honda’s statement.
“After a few days of rest at home and seeing that he was still unwell, today Marquez has been assessed by doctors in a medical check-up to evaluate his current status.
“As a precautionary measure, this coming weekend Marquez will not contest the Algarve Grand Prix.”
Marquez looked to put on a charge to take third in the MotoGP riders standings off the back of a strong closing part of the season, topped with a pair of victories in the last two contests at the Circuit of the Americas and Misano respectively.
The six-time premier class world champion currently sits sixth overall, but just 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Johann Zarco, while the third-placed Joan Mir lies 33 points ahead – meaning Marquez is now mathematically unable to challenge the Suzuki ace for a championship rostrum position.
Marquez’s latest injury comes after missing nearly the entirety of the 2020 campaign after breaking the humerus in his upper right arm, with further complications with the healing of his bone pushing his recovery back sufficiently to the point he was forced to miss the opening two races of the year in Qatar.
