Lewis Hamilton is set to receive a 10-place grid penalty for this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix after his Mercedes W12 was fitted with a new internal combustion engine.
Prior to the event in Istanbul, Hamilton used up all of his penalty-free components and sat on the brink of a grid drop.
Earlier this week, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that it was possible Hamilton could serve a penalty for the upcoming race.
However, Mercedes has opted to swap in solely a new ICE rather than the entire power unit, meaning his grid drop is set at 10 positions rather than being sent to the back of the field.
Last time out at the Russian Grand Prix, Verstappen started from the back of the field after taking on a fresh power unit and finished the race second on the road.
Hamilton leads Verstappen by two points in the Drivers’ Championship with seven races remaining on the 2021 schedule.
