Pierre Gasly will start Formula 1’s Italian Grand Prix from the pit lane after taking on a fresh power unit.
Gasly started Sprint from sixth place and made gains on the run to the first chicane, where he tagged the rear of Daniel Ricciardo’s McLaren.
The minor contact damaged Gasly’s front wing and as he turned into Curva Grande the part became lodged underneath the AlphaTauri AT02.
Gasly slide wide through the gravel trap before crashing into the barriers.
Gasly was set to start the grand prix from 19th, ahead of the penalised Valtteri Bottas, but he will instead line up from the pit lane.
AlphaTauri has elected to equip Gasly with a fresh power unit – his fourth of the season – while a different specification of Energy Store means a mandatory pit lane start.
Gasly, winner of last year’s Italian Grand Prix, will also use a fresh gearbox.
It leaves AlphaTauri with an uphill task to maintain its run of 16 straight races inside the points.
Gasly’s team-mate, Yuki Tsunoda, is set to start from 15th position.
