Lewis Hamilton set the quickest time during second practice for Formula 1’s Italian Grand Prix as Carlos Sainz crashed heavily.
Drivers focused on long run programmes at Monza ahead of Sprint and the grand prix with no more need to search for one-lap performance.
Hamilton’s session-topping best time, a 1:23.246s, was over three seconds off the pace of Valtteri Bottas’ fastest time in qualifying.
Bottas finished second, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez third and fourth respectively for Red Bull.
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon took fifth, ahead of the Alfa Romeo pairing of Robert Kubica and Antonio Giovinazzi, as Ocon’s team-mate Fernando Alonso classified eighth.
Sainz crashes heavily on Ferrari home turf
For the second successive Saturday practice session Sainz ended his programme in the wall after a hefty off.
Sainz spun through the entry to Ascari after taking too much kerb and suffered a sizeable impact with the wall.
Sainz was able to extricate himself from the SF21, which sustained heavy front-end damage, and was cleared after a subsequent medical check.
He will nonetheless have another check prior to Sprint as a precaution.
Team-mate Charles Leclerc reverted to an older engine for the session after the issues that affected him during Friday qualifying.
Leclerc then pulled into the pits late on after commenting “I need to box, I cannot explain it here,” bringing his programme to an early halt.
Ferrari later confirmed that Leclerc was feeling slightly unwell.
Italian Grand Prix Sprint is scheduled for 16:30 local time
