AJ Foyt Racing has announced that Charlie Kimball will drive the #11 Tresiba Chevy in this season’s IndyCar finale from Long Beach.
Kimball has been associated with the team since 2020, but shifted to a part time role this season.
The original plan was to run the Indy 500 along with the race from the Indianapolis road course earlier in May, but the 10-year veteran was bumped out and failed to qualify for the great race.
Kimball was visibly devastated after losing the chance to take part in the 500, but has been able to take the moment in stride.
Now an additional deal has come together for the end of the season, placing Kimball behind the wheel for the finale on the streets of Long Beach, California.
“Long Beach is my favorite event outside of the Indy 500 – I spent my childhood coming to this race and dreaming about being on the other side of the fence,” said Kimball in the release.
“The chance to compete at this track, so close to my hometown, three and a half years since my last time behind the wheel there, has been one of my biggest personal motivators.
“I cannot wait to get back behind the wheel of an AJ Foyt IndyCar, mostly because I love racing. I am also excited to race on behalf of my long-time sponsor Novo Nordisk one more time this season at one of my favorite races.
“Working with the team at AJ Foyt Racing, both in and out of the cockpit, has been very rewarding and I look forward to continuing that work in Long Beach.”
Kimball has been at the track for most of the season despite only taking part in a couple events, and he has also been working as a commentator for the Indy Lights series.
His return behind the wheel will give AJ Foyt three cars on track for the finale, with Kimball joining team-mates Dalton Kellett and Sebastien Bourdais.
“We are very happy to have Charlie and Novo Nordisk back for the season finale,” said Larry Foyt, team president.
“Long Beach is such a great race for the NTT IndyCar Series, and I’m glad we could put this event together for Charlie and Novo Nordisk because they have been great partners of our team.
“They have touched many lives and inspired many race fans through the motorsports platform, and I’m honored that our team was able to be a small part of that.”
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach takes place on September 26.
