Alexander Lynn’s quest for hometown glory got off to a great start as the Mahindra driver seized the Julius Baer Pole Position by nearly three tenths of a second.
It’s an all-British front row lockout for the first race of the London EPrix. BMW i Andretti’s Jake Dennis managed to claim second ahead of Nissan e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi.
Conditions on the indoor/outdoor circuit improved throughout the session following rain earlier that morning and saw Groups 3 and 4 capitalise on the opportunities available to move up the championship standings.
Andre Lotterer beat Lucas di Grassi’s leading time by six tenths to put himself into provisional Super Pole and his 1:23.900 lap eventually saw him top Group Qualifying.
However, BMW i Andretti’s Maximilian Guenther was not so fortunate. After setting the pace in FP2, he found himself in the run-off area in Turn 16.
The German driver’s session was prematurely ended once he tried to overcorrect into Turn 14 and hit the wall heading through Turns 15 and 16. As a consequence, he will now start from the back of the grid as his mechanics try to repair his suspected suspension damage.
Lotterer would be joined by fellow Group 3 drivers Lynn and Dennis, as well as Sebastien Buemi, Sergio Sette Camara and Norman Nato
Conditions eased off as Super Pole got underway and Nato was lucky to avoid contact with the wall after sliding around the Royal Victoria Docks.
Times continued to drop throughout the session, however it was Lynn’s day of reckoning. The British driver put in a stellar lap of 1:23.245, going two tenths clear of compatriot Dennis.
Buemi will line up from third on the grid after putting in a strong final sector. Sette Camara was one of the standouts of the session as the Dragon/Penske Autosport driver secured fourth on the grid.
Despite going last in Super Pole, Lotterer failed to optimise the drying track and starts fifth with ROKiT Venturi’s Norman Nato for company in sixth.
Lucas di Grassi missed on Super Pole by over a tenth of a second but will line up ahead of Mahindra’s Alexander Sims on the fourth row for the Brit’s home race.
A better showing for Mercedes EQ’s Nyck de Vries sees him start from ninth and Joel Eriksson managed to put in his best ABB Formula E Qualifying so far to complete the top 10.
Jaguar’s first race on home soil for 17 years was a mixed performance as Mitch Evans will start from 11th. Meanwhile, teammate and championship leader Sam Bird will have a fight on his hands from 18th on the grid.
Following his incident in FP2 earlier today, Stoffel Vandoorne will line up from 14th for Mercedes EQ.
However, the difficulties for Group 1 qualifiers continue after bearing the brunt of the wet conditions. Mortara was the lead championship contender in 16th ahead of reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa.
Envision Virgin’s Nick Cassidy and Robin Frijns qualified in 20th and 22nd, respectively. DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne rounded out the timed laps in 23rd having set the pace in the dry FP1 session the previous day,
