Alfa Romeo says “everything is open” regarding its 2022 Formula 1 driver line-up.
The team, which is operated by Sauber Motorsport, has fielded Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi since 2019.
Alfa Romeo confirmed prior to the British Grand Prix that a multi-year extension had been agreed to continue its involvement with Sauber.
Alfa Romeo Team Principal Frederic Vasseur outlined that “you can say it is always good to have a kind of continuity” to “have a reference” but was open to change.
“We will do the choice when it will be the right time to do it.
“We could keep the same line-up, we could change, everything is open.
“I think it is also quite comfortable for the team to have everything open, good for Antonio, good for Kimi.
“I don’t have the feeling to be under pressure [amid an uncertain future] is fundamentally bad. We need the pressure to perform and I don’t want to be in an easy world.”
Vasseur added that Alfa Romeo will only make its decision when other pieces of the driver puzzle have fallen into place.
“I will do as I did in the past,” he said. “I think it is good for us to keep everybody under pressure and we will see how the market is evolving.
“Mercedes has to take a decision and then Red Bull has to take a decision and then like a domino at one stage we will have opportunities and take a decision at this stage.”
