The IndyCar Series has announced that there will be a brand new video game released dedicated to the series in 2023.
The game will be developed and published by Motorsport Games, a company that currently produces licensed games for NASCAR, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the British Touring Car Championship.
There will also be a collaboration between the series and Motorsport Games that will see an esports competition that could have current driver participation.
“Our partnership with Motorsport Games will bring the fierce competition of the NTT IndyCar Series to a global gaming audience hungry for quality motorsports content,” said Mark Miles, president and CEO of Penske Entertainment Corp.
“Like the talent and depth of our field, IndyCar’s universe continues to expand and grow rapidly. Motorsport Games is an industry leader with a track record of innovation, and we know our fans will have 2023 and the debut of this new video game circled on their calendars.”
This will be first time since 2004 that IndyCar has had an officially licensed video game, as the Codemasters release on PS2 and Xbox was the final one, nearly two decades ago.
In recent years, IndyCar models have been added to popular simulators including iRacing, and those have been the only way in which fans have been able to sample the modern cars at home.
iRacing also hosted a virtual IndyCar series that had participation from many real-world drivers and was broadcast on television during the pause in action at the start of the pandemic.
Formula 1 has had a dedicated, officially licensed game title each year for over a decade, with this year seeing the introduction of a greatly expanded story mode.
It is unknown if the IndyCar game will have a similar feature, and no technical details of the release are known at this time except that there will be a PC version as well as one for the PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
