Mexico has proved to be a promising hunting ground for Pascal Wehrlein as the Porsche driver claimed his second Julius Baer Pole Position, narrowly outpacing Nissan e.dams’ Oliver Rowland and BMW i Andretti’s Jake Dennis.
The German driver topped the first half of qualifying at the Autodromo Miguel E.Abed, with his 1:23.505 lap putting him over three-tenths ahead of practice pace-setter Rowland.
He was joined in Super Pole by Dennis, Jean-Eric Vergne and Edoardo Mortara, whilst Maximilian Guenther was the only non-Group 2 driver to make it into the shootout.
Drivers drove on the limit, with Wehrlein’s 1:23.780 lap at the end of the session less than a tenth quicker than British drivers Rowland and Dennis.
This was his second pole position in ABB Formula E following his at Season Six’s Mexico City E-Prix around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Vergne will start from fourth for DS Techeetah, whilst Guenther made it two BMW i Andretti’s in the top five. Mortara was the slowest in Super Pole after outbreaking himself and lines up in sixth.
Alexander Sims missed out on Super Pole in seventh, 0.902s slower than the leading time. Brazilian drivers Lucas di Grassi and Dragon/Penske Autosport’s Sergio Sette Camara will line up in eighth and ninth, respectively.
The second Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler of Rene Rast rounded out the top 10, ahead of compatriot Andre Lotterer for TAG Heuer Porsche.
Reigning champion and Monaco E-Prix winner last time out, Antonio Felix da Costa was 12th ahead of Jaguar’s Mitch Evans.
Joel Eriksson qualified in 14th on his Formula E debut, whilst Envision Virgin’s Nick Cassidy could only manage the 15th quickest time.
A disappointing session ensued for Mercedes EQ, with Nyck de Vries forced to settle for 16th after traffic in Group 1 saw him cross the line with seconds to spare.
It’s an all-British ninth row, with Oliver Turvey the highest-placed NIO 333 in 17th, narrowly ahead of Mahindra’s Alex Lynn and ROKiT Venturi’s Norman Nato in 19th.
Stoffel Vandoorne was another casualty of the chaos in the opening group. Jaguar’s Sam Bird overtook him into Turn 1 on their qualifying laps, whilst up ahead Robin Frijns heavily locked up.
As a result, Bird will start from 20th, as Frijns and Vandoorne languish at the back of the pack in 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
Unfortunately, Sebastien Buemi could not match the pace of his Nissan e.dams teammate and will start from 21st place.
NIO 333’s Tom Blomqvist rounds out the timing sheets following a major moment in the final minutes of qualifying ruining his lap.
