Marco Andretti will make his IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship debut at the Six Hours of Watkins Glen, partnering cousin Jarett Andretti in the LMP3 category.
The two Andrettis will team up aboard the #36 Andretti Autosport Ligier JS P320 alongside Indy Lights champion Oliver Askew in the third round of the Michelin Endurance Cup.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to Watkins Glen and sports cars,” Marco Andretti commented. “I know John [Andretti] really loved driving with family, so I am happy Jarett and I can continue that part for him.”
The 34-year-old grandson of legendary racing driver Mario Andretti has had a small number of sportscar starts in his career, as he has primarily been active in IndyCar.
In 2008, he raced an Andretti-Green Racing Acura LMP2 car in three rounds of the American Le Mans Series, including the Twelve Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans.
He also has one start in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to his name, joining Rebellion Racing in 2010, although he failed to reached the finish.
“Obviously it is very special for me and my whole family that I will be racing with Marco at Watkins Glen,” Jarett Andretti said. “The Glen has been great to us in the past, I am excited to learn from Marco and have him join Oliver and I for our first endurance race this season!”
According to Michael Andretti, Marco’s father and CEO of Andretti Autosport, getting the two cousins to race together was something the team worked towards in memory of John Andretti’s passing in 2020.
“I’m so proud to see Jarett and Marco coming together to co-drive at Watkins Glen,” he said. “Racing has always been a family affair for us, but it was especially important to John, and it’s been a goal of ours to get them in a car together.
“I’m just glad that this opportunity worked out for Marco to come onboard for the first endurance race of the season.”
