Japanese Super GT star Ryo Hirakawa will sample Toyota’s GR010 Hybrid at a test following the 8 Hours of Portimao on June 15-17.
The 2017 Super GT winner and 2020 runner-up will have a test outing in Toyota’s new hybrid Hypercar following the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship.
He currently competes with GR Team KeePer Tom’s in Super GT, while also contesting the Japanese Super Formula season as part of Team Impul.
The test outing in Portugal and subsequent travel restrictions will mean that the 27-year-old will be unable to compete at the Super Formula round at Sugo later that week.
While Hirakawa has spent the majority of his career in his native Japan, he has had some success in European prototype racing.
Most notably, he spent 2016 and 2017 racing in the European Le Mans Series with TDS Racing and G-Drive Racing, taking three wins and three podiums in just nine starts.
He also made two starts at Le Mans and was in the running to join Toyota’s LMP1 squad for the 2017 edition of the race, before the seat ultimately went to Yuji Kunimoto. He did test Toyota’s TS050 Hybrid on multiple occasions.
