Reigning DTM champion Rene Rast will be joining German broadcaster SAT.1 as an expert commentator for the upcoming DTM season.
The three-time champion is unable to race in the series in 2021 due to clashing commitments in Formula E, but will join DTM’s German broadcast for selected rounds, starting with the Red Bull Racing on September 3-5.
Rast is not the first DTM champion to fulfill the role, as he will be alternating with fellow series winners Timo Scheider and Martin Tomczyk. Each of the three drivers will partner regular commentator Edgar Mielke throughout the season, providing commentary exclusively to German viewers.
The rest of the broadcast team for the season remains unchanged, as the programme will be headed by Andrea Kaiser and Matthias Killing.
Munich-based SAT.1 has been carrying out the German-speaking broadcast for the past three seasons, and will continue to do so as the series moves away from the Class One regulations and towards a first season under the new GT3-based rules.
“The special thing about the 2021 season certainly is the changed regulations concerning the cars,” Rast said about the upcoming season. “In the past four years during which I raced, or even since I can remember, in fact, DTM cars were thoroughbred prototypes, the Class 1 cars in particular.
“Now, the GT cars are coming. In the process, the brand variety simply is what matters most. There are six brands in the field.
“I think that is what DTM always wanted in the first place, various brands and well-known DTM drivers on top of that, but also many new drivers who will surely be spicing up the action in the series. From that perspective, I am very eager to see what will happen.”
