Red Bull’s Alexander Albon will return to Formula 1 machinery this week as part of the latest Pirelli-run tyre test.
Albon started 36 grands prix with Toro Rosso and Red Bull across 2019/20, scoring two podiums, but lost his race seat for 2021 to Sergio Perez.
Albon was retained by Red Bull in a test and reserve role and is also due to represent the brand in its AlphaTauri colours in this year’s overhauled DTM series.
Pirelli is in the process of honing its 18-inch tyres ahead of their introduction in 2022 and has arranged a two-day test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this week.
Red Bull, Alpine and Alfa Romeo will be in action at the Spanish Grand Prix venue on Tuesday and Wednesday in order to gather data for Pirelli.
Albon will carry out duties for Red Bull while former Toro Rosso team-mate Daniil Kvyat is poised to run for Alpine, and Robert Kubica will get behind the wheel of Alfa Romeo machinery.
Albon has previously outlined his desire to return to a Formula 1 race seat in 2022.
The upcoming test is set to be the fifth of 10 arranged by sole tyre supplier Pirelli prior to the usual group post-season gathering in Abu Dhabi.
