Longtime NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Jennifer Jo Cobb was expected to make her NASCAR Cup Series debut in the Geico 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. She planned to drive the #15 for Rick Ware Racing, but NASCAR did not clear her to run a Cup Series race at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. As a result, J.J. Yeley will drive the #15 Sunday.
“We’ve been informed by the sanctioning body that Jennifer is not approved to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series event at Talladega Superspeedway this coming weekend,” a statement from Rick Ware Racing read. “This is an unfortunate situation, but as a team we support NASCAR’s decision to uphold the sanctioning [body’s] rules and regulations.”
According to the NASCAR rule book, a driver who has not competed for a year in a given series, must apply for clearance from the sanctioning body to contest specific races. Cobb was required to apply for clearance to enter Sunday’s race, because she has no Cup Series experience.
Yeley has driven RWR entries part-time in the Cup Series since 2018.
Cobb has contested 217 Truck Series races since 2008 and 31 Xfinity Series races since 2004. In nine Truck Series races at Talladega, she has a best finish of 11th in 2018. Her best Xfinity Series finish in two races at Talladega was a 29th in 2018, her most recent Xfinity Series race. Cobb has only one-career top-10 finish across both series — a sixth in the 2021 Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.
