Alexander Rossi led the field in the second and final practice session for IndyCar’s opening weekend from Barber Motorsports Park.
Rossi put in his best lap right as time expired on the session, completing the undulating Alabama circuit in 1:06:0797.
The Andretti Autosport veteran led a gaggle of Chip Ganassi Racing drivers, who appear to have the car setup to beat after an hour and a half of running.
Marcus Ericsson, Scott Dixon, and Alex Palou, finished in second through fourth respectively, showing that the championship winning team has what it takes to put any of its drivers in the mix at the top of the field.
Following in fifth was Felix Rosenqvist, who followed up a top-10 run in the morning with a lap of 1:06.3948 in the afternoon.
Jimmie Johnson once again finished in last place, although he did improve his time from the morning session.
The session was interrupted three separate times for different incidents around the track, the most dramatic of which was Colton Herta who slid into the Armco outside of turn 2.
Herta had been leading the timesheets when he went off, but ended the day in 15th position as drivers put in fast laps on the softer red-walled tyres near the end of the session.
Josef Newgarden also had a frantic moment when he dropped a wheel in the gravel and had to scramble to catch his skidding car. But after regaining control, the 2019 series champion drove away unharmed.
The session was actually extended a couple minutes by race control to allow teams to get one last fast lap attempt at the end of the session instead of ending the final practice session under the red flag.
The next time all 24 drivers get back on track, it will be for qualifying at 17:55 Eastern Time (22:55 BST).
