This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed will celebrate the career of motorsport icon Roger Penske.
Each year the Festival of Speed sets a theme around the event with the upcoming edition titled ‘The Maestros – Motorsport’s Great All-Rounders’.
Penske’s motorsport career began the early 1960s, but switched to becoming a team owner in 1966 and has competed in Formula 1, IndyCar, NASCAR, Can-Am, Australian Supercars and Sportscar racing in the USA.
Over the past 55 years, Team Penske has gone on to claim 23 IndyCar titles (nine USAC, five IndyCar Series, nine CART), two NASCAR Cup Series titles, two IMSA and ALMS championships, a class victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours and 18 Indy 500 wins and two Daytona 500 wins.
Ahead of the 2020 IndyCar season, he also took a step back from the running of his eponymous team to purchase the series outright as well as Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“I have wonderful memories of racing at Goodwood in 1963 and am honoured to be invited to return this summer,” said Penske.
“I am very much looking forward to sharing in the celebrations with Goodwood’s passionate fans as they return for the 2021 Festival of Speed.”
Penske will also be at the event, taking to the hill in the 2008 Porsche RS Spyder which won the 2008 Sebring 12hr winner.
Several of Penske’s most famous cars will also be on display at event such as the McLaren M16B, PC-23, and the PC4 which claimed his one and only F1 victory in the hands of John Watson at the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix.
The Duke of Richmond added: “We are incredibly excited that Roger is able to join us at the Festival of Speed this year as we celebrate Motorsport’s Great All-Rounders, among whom he undoubtedly numbers.
“We are very much looking forward to seeing both the hugely successful cars which have been assembled, as well as Roger himself take to the Hill over the course of the weekend.”
This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed is scheduled to run from July 8 to 11.
