J.R Hildebrand will race with A.J Foyt Enterprises for the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 in a 60th-anniversary livery celebrating Foyt’s first triumph at the Brickyard in 1961.
The 2011 runner-up and rookie of the year will be behind the wheel of the No.1 ABC Supply-backed entry which will be Foyt’s fourth car for the prestigious event.
The No.1 is usually reserved for the series champion – currently Scott Dixon, however, Chip Ganassi Racing has given permission for Foyt’s team to use the number at the Indy 500.
Hildebrand’s car will adorned with an all-white livery which will be a throwback to the colours of the No. 1 Offenhauser Roadster Foyt drove in 1961.
The crew working on the No.1 car will also be adorned in white and black modelled after the 1961 crew headed by legendary chief mechanic George Bignotti.
“This is definitely a drive to be excited about, and for multiple reasons,” said Hildebrand.
“Getting the chance to drive for A.J. and Larry is something I’m looking forward to no matter what, but with ABC honouring the 60th anniversary of A.J.’s first 500 win that makes it extra special.
Foyt, often referred to as ‘Super Tex’ eventually claimed four Indy 500 victories during his career and feels a strong connection to the car which secured his maiden win at the Brickyard.
“At my age, I don’t get too excited anymore but I’m thrilled to see this car painted like my ’61 car,” said Foyt.
“That win was so special because it was my dream just to be good enough to make the race.
“To win it three years later well, I was thrilled to death about it. They were all sweet victories but to win that first one after where I came from, it was unbelievable.
“Having ABC Supply sponsor this car is fantastic.
“They were awful good to us as our main sponsor for 15 years and they came back for the 500 last year when things were pretty tough.
“Well, that just shows what type of company they are. We’ve been great friends and we’ll remain that way.”
The 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 is currently scheduled for May 30.
