Fausto Gresini continues to make progress in his recovery from Covid-19 from hospital in Bologna, the Italian making “slow but continuous improvements” according to his doctors.
Gresini has been in intensive care in a specialist Covid-19 ward at the Maggiore Carlo Alberta Pizzardi hospital in Bologna for the past month after his health took a turn for the worse shortly after contracting the virus just before Christmas.
He was put into an enforced coma soon after being transferred from his local medical centre at home in Imola to the bigger and better equipped Bologna hospital as he struggled to breathe on his own, while a bout of intestinal pneumonia also delayed his progress.
He made sufficient recovery to be brought out of his coma just over three weeks ago, although has had to remain hooked up to a ventilator ever since due to the damage inflicted on his lungs as a result of fighting off Covid-19.
The double 125cc world champion has been making small steps across the past 14 days, with the latest report released by his Gresini MotoGP squad revealing that he is now able to “make video calls and to be seen by (wife) Nadia.”
While still needing the ventilator to help breathing, the statement from Dr Nicola Cilloni of the Maggiore Carlo Alberta Pizzardi hospital also revealed that Gresini is “working” on trying to “recover the strength” in order to breathe unaided.
Cilloni added that the next steps of Gresini’s recovery will focus not just on regaining his ability to breathe freely, but improving his nutritional state also.
