Marc Marquez has finally been allowed to return following ten days in hospital at home in Spain following his recent arm surgery, the Honda MotoGP outfit announced on Sunday.
Marquez underwent further corrective surgery to the broken right arm he suffered in the 2020 season opening MotoGP event at Jerez after suffering from a “pseudarthrosis of the right humerus”, a condition that prevented the broken humerus bone from healing properly.
The six-time premier class champion was originally only meant to stay in hospital overnight following the procedure-which lasted eight hours and went to plan without complication- though Honda confirmed on Sunday evening that he had in fact remained for ten days, and that he has now returned home to continue “specific antibiotic treatment.”
Marquez was forced to miss pretty much the entirety of the ’20 MotoGP season after suffering the injury in the first race of the year-the Spanish Grand Prix-though he tried to make an early return to action for the Austrian GP only a month after his broken right arm had been inflicted.
He attempted to ride in FP1 at the Red Bull Ring after undergoing a second surgery to replace the initial metal plate to help his injury heal, though soon elected to head home after realising his arm had failed to heal sufficiently, Marquez shifting his focus to returning later in the year.
His recovery ultimately failed to progress as expected, leading to his third surgery at the start of December to receive a bone graft after it was found his humerus had failed to heal as anticipated.
The timing of his latest procedure all but rules him out of any chance of making the grid for the ’21 opener in Qatar, with an expected six month recovery time likely to leave him out of active competition until May, by which time at least three events will have taken place.
Andrea Dovizioso could be in a perfect position to deputise for Marquez should his recovery time run past the season start, though Honda could elect to shift ’20 factory racer Alex Marquez from new team LCR to join new signing Pol Espargaro in order to replace his brother.
