George Russell will sport a special helmet for this weekend’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as a tribute to Frank and Claire Williams, who stepped away from the team earlier this year.
With Lewis Hamilton making a return after a series of negative Covid-19 tests, Russell is back at the Grove-based team after his maiden outing with Mercedes last weekend.
Williams has endured a number of difficult seasons and came under new management in August with new owners Dorilton Capital taking over at the helm of the organisation.
As a result, Frank Williams, who founded the team in the late 1970s, and his daughter Claire, who has overseen the day-to-day operation in recent years, relinquished their roles.
In Abu Dhabi this weekend, Russell’s revised helmet design celebrates the success of the team across the last four decades.
“Frank, Claire, this one is for you, to celebrate your incredible journey in F1,” Russell wrote on social media.
“Thank you for all you’ve done for me, the team and the sport. Hope you like it.”
Russell will remain at Williams in 2021 alongside current team-mate Nicholas Latifi.
With just one race remaining and zero points scored so far in the 2020 campaign, Williams is on course for its first point-less Championship finish in its history.
