Fernando Alonso has concluded his latest test with Renault ahead of his full-time Formula 1 comeback in 2021.
The two-time World Champion lapped the Yas Marina Circuit, home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in the Renault R.S. 18 on Sunday and Monday.
Alonso has taken part in a handful of tests with Renault this year as he prepares to race for the team next year, when it will be rebranded to Alpine.
After an outing in Bahrain earlier this month, the Spaniard completed 74 laps on Sunday in Abu Dhabi and a further 116 on Monday in the 2018 Renault car.
“It was fantastic to be back in the car, to feel the Formula 1 speed again in the 2018 car, getting to know the procedures of the team,” Alonso said.
“I enjoyed every single lap, I can’t wait until next year to be back racing and meanwhile I will support the team in the final races.”
F1 regulations stipulate that testing outside of grand prix weekends must be completed in a car that’s at least two years older the current specification, as to not gain a potential performance advantage.
It is not yet known when Alonso will receive another outing with Renault, as plans to run him at the post-season Young Drivers’ Test have seemingly fallen through amid unrest from rival teams.
Renault’s development driver Guanyu Zhou is also present at the test, and will close out the running programme on Tuesday, November 17.
