Rene Rast has become a three-time DTM champion by taking victory in the final race of the season at the Hockenheimring.
Title rival Nico Müller needed a victory to have a shot at winning the championship, but finished second after briefly holding the lead and finished runner-up in the championship for the second year in a row.
Rast started the race from pole position but was beaten off the line by Mike Rockenfeller and dropped the second, but would take the lead a few laps later. Müller, meanwhile, fought his way up to second after starting from fourth place.
Müller subsequently seized the lead during the pitstops, but Rast fought back and take the lead to win the race by a gap of ten seconds. The championship has put Rast second in the rankings for most DTM titles, only behind Bernd Schneider.
Jamie Green battled to third place in the final race under DTM’s Class One regulations by first making his way past Robin Frijns for fourth and then taking third from Rockenfeller.
Rockenfeller went on to finish fourth, with Frijns fifth and Loic Duval sixth after a close fight with BMW’s Jonathan Aberdein. Aberdein finished seventh, ahead of Timo Glock, Sheldon van der Linde and Philipp Eng in tenth.
Marco Wittmann finished eleventh, Fabio Scherer twelfth and Harrison Newey thirteenth. The running order was completed by Ferdinand Habsburg, Robert Kubica and Lucas Auer.
