Organisers of the Pau Grand Prix have confirmed that the event will not take place in 2021, marking its cancellation for a second successive year.
The streets around the French city have been used for racing events for 90 years with various categories visiting the venue.
Several high-profile names, including Juan Manuel Fangio, Sir Jackie Stewart and Lewis Hamilton, have all claimed victory at the Pau Grand Prix.
Of Hamilton’s contemporaries on the Formula 1 grid Romain Grosjean and Antonio Giovinazzi also won the event.
The title has been used for Formula 2, Formula 3000 and Formula 3 events, with the FIA-backed series utilising the streets until 2018, after which European Formula 3 merged with GP3 to create the current Formula 3 category.
With FIA Formula 3 aligning itself with Formula 1 rounds the 2019 Pau Grand Prix featured as part of the Euroformula Open championship.
The category was set to remain at Pau for 2020 but the event, due to be held in May, was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Organisers have now confirmed that plans for its return in 2021 have already been abandoned.
“It is with sadness that we announce that there will be no Pau Grand Prix in 2021,” confirmed event organisers.
“We had left the dates open on the calendar and were hoping for a return to a normal health situation at the end of the year.
“Unfortunately this is not the case and since the organisation of the event starts at least six months in advance, in consultation with the city, and promotors, we have withdrawn the dates from the calendar.”
Several other motorsport events have been cancelled this week in light of the worsening Covid-19 situation in Europe.
French F4’s penultimate event, planned for this weekend at Ledenon, has been abandoned, as has the World Rallycross round due to be held at Spa-Francorchamps.
